Customs clearance procedures
Customs clearance can be complicated and time-consuming – but not with us.
The customs clearance process involves several procedures that must be completed before goods can be released from customs. These procedures include:
- Documentation: All necessary documentation, such as commercial invoices, packing lists and bills of lading, must be submitted to the customs authorities. This documentation contains important information about the goods, such as their value, origin and destination.
- Inspection: Customs authorities may inspect goods to ensure that they comply with all relevant regulations and requirements. Inspection may include physical examination of goods as well as testing and sampling to check their quality and safety.
- Classification: Goods should be classified in accordance with Harmonised System (HS) codes, which are used to identify the nature of the goods and determine appropriate duties and taxes.
- Valuation: The value of the goods should be determined for customs purposes and may include factors such as purchase price, freight and insurance costs and any other costs associated with the shipment.
- Payment of duties and taxes: Once the value of the goods has been determined, duties and taxes must be calculated and paid to Customs before the goods can be released.
- Compliance: Customs clearance also includes ensuring all relevant regulations and requirements, such as those related to safety, health and environmental standards, are met.
